I don’t watch the soaps anymore. It’s all a bit same as to who’s doing what with whom and who is whose daddy. I think the general perception out there is that politics is very much alike in the same department. My belief, for what it’s worth is that politics is pretty much the better quality soap opera albeit with scummier villains. I know not all politicians are bad but the barrel these ‘apples’ go into when they rise near the top is contaminated. That’s where the quality drama is to be found.
I love the skulduggery, the scandals or when they are fighting for their political lives whilst smiling down a camera lens. I remember the excitement of Thatcher’s downfall. The sheer open war in the Tory party and Europe was her poison. I was just a boy of 15 and she was pretty much all I’d known as prime minister. It was a huge event because she was a huge act to follow. That was the drama that got me interested. What was your dramatic political soap moment? Was there a moment you got hooked by a scandal or a character?
The political soap opera writes itself, it’s forever renewing and still packed full of surprise’s. The Brexit referendum was perhaps the equivalent of a soap special episode. It was the moment when dirty Den handed Angie the divorce papers or when J.R was shot. A truly seminal moment for this country where we are not sure what the future really looks like. It is indeed a bit of a cliff-hanger.
No one can deny one of the lead characters, Theresa May, some credit in having the guts to take the top job at the time when the pressures are so immense that effectively, she took the poison chalice. No one can deny it takes sheer guts to take a hard Brexit line. It seemed to fit in with Britain being independently ruled and having its own immigration policy. How do we do that now? The E.U has, just like the big villain, made sure by use of membership of the single market, that any country leaving is still somehow under their courts and should have free movement of peoples or else the option is to completely leave and risk plunging your economy into recession. Its a mafia hit job, it feels like its going to be impossible at times.
Sometimes I look at all this soap opera politics and however enthralled by the twists and turns, I think for every ones sake we need to get back to basics. There is a simpler way we can all trade and get on just fine whilst trading knowledge and information and not being all Dynasty and knifing each other to be the top dog. We are a human race and must act as one and understand a nations right to its independence if that’s what it wants. Nations are as people, they represent the psychology of the people that live there. Each nation must be as a person and treat others how they wish to be treated themselves. They must give love freely and put aside ego to work through differences. If they love unconditionally then there will always the right to amend the relationship at anytime. Seeing the nation as a person makes the situation in dealing with other nations more simple. It is more simple! Far less Dynasty and more Hilda Ogden pouring a brew whilst worrying about the price of lamb chops! Ahh What price the quiet life?
Maybe we’ll get our answers soon. Will we? Won’t we? Oooh I can’t wait for the next episode! Damn!… I’m hooked!
